“Hear, O Israel: The LORD our God, the LORD is one.”
- Deuteronomy 6:4 ESV
My human was sitting on the porch this morning with his Bible in one hand and coffee in the other.
I was sitting beside him, keeping watch over the squirrels, the birds, and anything else that might require my immediate attention.
My human was reading about Jesus.
Now, I’ve learned that people have a funny way of making simple things complicated.
But some things really aren’t complicated.
There is one God.
Not one God among many.
Not one God who happens to be our favorite.
Not one God for this person and another god for somebody else.
There is one true God—the God who created heaven and earth, who gives life, who saves, and who alone is worthy of our worship.
And this one true God has made Himself known to us through Jesus Christ.
Jesus is Lord.
Jesus is the Savior.
Jesus is the Son of God.
Jesus is the Messiah.
He isn’t a better choice on a shelf full of religious choices.
He is the One and Only.
That got me thinking.
People are pretty good at making their own little gods.
Money can become a god.
Success can become a god.
Comfort can become a god.
A career, a relationship, possessions, politics—even ourselves—can become a god when we give them the trust, devotion, and obedience that belong to God alone.
But those gods are made by people.
They can’t hear our prayers.
They can’t forgive our sins.
They can’t give us eternal life.
They can’t save us.
Only the one true God can do that.
And that’s why Jesus matters so much.
Jesus didn’t come merely to point us toward God.
He came as God’s Son, the promised Messiah and Savior, declaring, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life.”
There aren’t many ways to God with Jesus being one of them.
There is one Lord.
One Savior.
One Messiah.
One true God.
One way home.
I looked up at my human.
He took another sip of coffee and turned the page.
I think he was wondering whether his life really showed what his Bible said he believed.
That’s a good question for all of us.
If there is only one true God, then He deserves more than a Sunday morning corner of our lives.
He deserves all of us.
So I came to a pretty simple conclusion this morning.
A dog doesn’t need a lot of theology to understand loyalty.
If Jesus really is Lord, then follow Him.
If He really is Savior, then trust Him.
If He really is the Son of God and the Messiah, then worship Him.
And if our God really is the one true God, then don’t settle for the little gods we make for ourselves.
There is only One.
And He is enough.
At least that’s what this old dog learned on the porch today.
