My human was sitting on the porch this morning with his Bible in one hand and a cup of coffee in the other.
I was sitting beside him doing what I do best.
Listening.
Well… listening and hoping he might have a biscuit fall from his lap.
He was reading about Jesus and something caught my attention.
He said, “There are a lot of myths in this world.”
Now, I know a little something about myths.
There’s Big Foot.
I’ve heard about him.
Never seen him.
Of course, humans have spent years looking for him.
But there’s a difference between believing a story because somebody says it might be true and believing something because there is evidence that it is true.
That got my human thinking.
And me sniffing.
The Gospel isn’t a cleverly invented story. Peter said he was an eyewitness to Jesus. The disciples saw Him. They heard Him. They watched Him die. And they encountered Him alive again.
Christian faith isn’t built on wishful thinking.
It is built on the person and work of Jesus Christ.
That matters because this world has plenty of myths.
Myths that say you can save yourself.
Myths that say money will satisfy you.
Myths that say success will give you worth.
Myths that say truth is whatever you want it to be.
Myths that say there are many ways to God.
But the Gospel tells us something different.
We are sinners who cannot rescue ourselves.
Jesus came as the Son of God, lived the perfect life we could not live, died the death we deserved, and rose again so that sinners who trust in Him can be forgiven and reconciled to God.
That’s not a myth we need to chase.
That’s grace we need to receive.
And because the Gospel is real, I don’t have to be controlled by every story this world tells me.
I can test what I hear against God’s Word.
I can recognize lies because I know the truth.
And I can keep walking with Jesus even when the world tells me I’m foolish for believing.
My human closed his Bible and took another drink of coffee.
I looked at him.
He looked at me.
Neither one of us had seen Big Foot.
But we both knew something better.
The truth that Jesus Christ is real.
And here’s what I’ve learned:
Knowing the Gospel is more than knowing about Jesus. The Gospel calls us to respond to Jesus.
So how do we respond?
We repent. We turn from our sin and stop pretending we can save ourselves.
We believe. We trust that Jesus is who He said He is—the Son of God, the Messiah and Savior—and that His death and resurrection are sufficient to save us.
We surrender. We stop sitting on the throne of our own lives and place our lives under the lordship of Jesus.
And then we follow Him—not because following Jesus earns our salvation, but because His grace has changed what we love, how we live, and where we are going.
If you have never trusted Christ, you don’t need a special formula or perfect words.
Come to Him honestly.
Confess your sin.
Ask Him for forgiveness.
Put your trust in Jesus Christ alone.
Surrender your life to Him and follow Him.
The Gospel isn’t an invitation to believe a myth.
It is an invitation to trust a living Savior.
Don’t spend your life chasing what cannot save you.
Turn to Jesus.
Trust Jesus.
Surrender to Jesus.
Follow Jesus.
And that’s one truth this old dog knows is worth sinking his teeth into.
Although, between you and me, I still wouldn’t mind finding Big Foot.
Especially if he’s carrying a biscuit.
