“We are hard pressed on every side, but not crushed; perplexed, but not in despair; persecuted, but not abandoned; struck down, but not destroyed… Therefore we do not lose heart. Though outwardly we are wasting away, yet inwardly we are being renewed day by day.”
- 2 Corinthians 4:8-9,16
I’ve lived long enough to know that not every sunrise feels the same.
Some mornings my human steps onto the porch with a steaming cup of coffee, his Bible tucked under his arm, and a smile that tells me all is well. Those are easy mornings.
I stretch, wag my tail, and settle in beside the old chair as the birds begin their concert.
Other mornings…
Well, the coffee still steams, but the smile takes a little longer to arrive.
His eyes stare farther than the foothills on the horizon.
The pages of his Bible turn slower.
Sometimes he doesn’t say much at all.
I don’t know what makes a hard day.
Dogs aren’t burdened with calendars, deadlines, bad news, aching hearts, or wondering how everything is going to work out.
We mostly worry about neighbor cats acting suspicious and whether someone remembered breakfast.
But I know a heavy heart when I see one.
So I scoot a little closer.
I lay my head on his foot.
And I wait.
I’ve noticed something over the years.
My human never stays quiet forever.
Before long, I hear him whisper a prayer.
Then he reads a verse.
Sometimes he smiles.
Sometimes he wipes away a tear.
But every single time, he stands up just a little straighter than when he sat down.
The circumstances don’t always change... he does.
That’s when I realized something this old dog almost missed.
Hard days don’t win because they show up.
They only win if they convince us that God has left the porch.
But He never does.
The same God who painted another sunrise is still holding tomorrow.
The same Savior who carried the cross is more than able to carry today’s burdens.
The same Spirit who brings comfort still whispers hope into weary hearts.
I’ve watched enough mornings to know this is true.
Clouds may cover the sun for a while, but they never make it disappear.
Neither do hard days hide the goodness of God.
So if today feels heavy, don’t hand your joy over to the trouble you’re facing.
Sit down with Jesus.
Open His Word.
Tell Him exactly what’s on your heart.
Stay there long enough to hear His voice over all the noise.
Then get up.
Walk forward.
Smile when you can.
Laugh when the moment finds you.
Love the people around you.
And don’t let the hard day steal what Jesus died to give you.
A hard day may visit every one of us, but it doesn’t have to become our address.
When we anchor our hearts in Christ instead of our circumstances, joy isn’t something the world gives—it becomes something the world can’t take away.
And I’ve learned something worth remembering:
Hard days come… but they don’t win.
Not when Jesus is walking through them with you.
Keep the Faith… Carpe Diem
