Chasing the Wind: A Dog's Perspective

Chasing the Wind: A Dog's Perspective

“Yet when I surveyed all that my hands had done and what I had toiled to achieve, everything was meaningless, a chasing after the wind; nothing was gained under the sun.” — Ecclesiastes 2:11

I don’t know much about the wind, except that it has a habit of carrying things that seem mighty important…until you catch them.

Leaves.
Feathers.
Plastic grocery bags.
I have chased every one of them with all four paws flying. You’d think by now I’d have learned that the wind always has another direction in mind.

My human chuckles every time. “You’ll never catch the wind, buddy.

He’s right.

I’ve noticed something else, though.
My human used to chase things too.
Bigger truck.
More work.
More stuff.
Busier days.
The kind of things that promise happiness but somehow leave folks just as restless when they finally get them.

Then one morning… everything changed.

Instead of rushing out the door, he carried his Bible to the porch with a cup of coffee.
We sat there in the quiet while the sun stretched across the trees.
He didn’t seem to be chasing anything anymore.
He was simply spending time with Jesus.

Funny thing…his smile became easier.
His patience grew longer.
His heart seemed lighter.

I realized something as I rested my head on his shoe.

The wind can keep the leaves.

Imagine having everything the world could offer and still feeling empty.
Wealth.
Wisdom.
Power.
Success.
If anyone could have said, “I’ve finally arrived,” it would’ve been Solomon. Instead, he called it “chasing the wind.

You see, real joy isn’t found by running faster after the next shiny thing.
Peace isn’t waiting in the next purchase, promotion, or possession.
Happiness built on temporary things blows away just as quickly as they arrive.

Only Jesus gives what the world never can.

The more my human seeks Christ, the less he seems interested in chasing everything else.

He has discovered what King Solomon finally understood—that life apart from God is just chasing the wind.

As for me?
I’ll probably still sprint after a leaf or two.
I am a dog, after all.

But when I see my human open God’s Word, I know exactly where I belong.

Right there beside him.

Because the greatest place either of us can be isn’t chasing what the wind carries…

It’s resting at the feet of the One who created the wind in the first place.

Maybe today the wind is tempting you to run after something that won’t last.

Instead, pull up a chair.
Open God’s Word.
Sit awhile with Jesus.

The wind will keep blowing.

But you’ll never regret staying close to the Him.

Prayer: Lord, forgive us for chasing the temporary while neglecting the eternal. Turn our hearts away from the things that can never satisfy and draw us closer to Jesus, where true joy, lasting peace, and abundant life are found. Amen.

Keep the Faith… Carpe Diem
