Old Lazy Dog brings a different view of faith, life, and the struggles we face in the marketplace and our day to day lives…while we strive to go deeper in our faith walk, put our faith to work, and see God at work around us on a daily basis.

In Hoc: A Dog's Perspective

“If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross and follow me.”
- Matthew 16:24

My human was reading something the other morning when he leaned back, took a sip of coffee, and said four words I’d never heard before.

In Hoc Signo Vinces.

I lifted my head.

Sounded important.

Or possibly like something you’d say before throwing me a treat or two.

Turns out it’s Latin.

In this sign, you will conquer.”

The story goes that before a great battle, Constantine saw a sign of the cross accompanied by those words. He went into battle beneath that sign.

Now, I don’t know much about emperors, Latin, or ancient battles.

But I know something about signs.

When my human picks up my leash, that’s a sign we’re going somewhere.

When he opens the treat cabinet, that’s a sign something wonderful is about to happen.

And when he grabs his Bible before sunrise, that’s a sign he knows he needs Somebody stronger than himself for whatever the day might bring.

Maybe that’s the lesson.

We’re all fighting battles.

Some folks battle fear.
Some battle temptation.
Some battle grief.
Some battle pride.
Some battle things nobody else can see.

And this world keeps telling us we’ll conquer if we’re stronger, smarter, richer, tougher, or just try harder.

But my human has lived long enough to know better.

He looked at the cross hanging on the wall and said quietly,

“Buddy, the victory isn’t in us. It’s in Jesus.”

Now that I understand.

Because a dog doesn’t have to know where the road ends when he trusts the one holding the leash.

And Christians don’t have to face every battle knowing exactly how it will turn out.

We just need to know Who has already won the war.

Jesus conquered sin.
Jesus conquered death.
Jesus walked out of the grave.

So when the world tells you to fight beneath the banner of money, power, politics, popularity, pride, or your own strength, remember the only banner worth following.

The Cross.

Not because the cross is some lucky charm.

But because of the Savior who hung upon it—and the empty tomb that followed.

The Cross.

That sign means something much bigger.

My human explained that the cross looked like defeat before it ever looked like victory.

Jesus was mocked.
Beaten.
Rejected.
Crucified.
Buried.

If you had been standing there that Friday, you might have thought darkness had won.

But Sunday was coming.

In Hoc Signo Vinces.

In this sign, you will conquer.

Or, as this old dog might put it:

Keep your eyes on the Cross.
Stay close to Jesus.
And when the battle gets loud…
Remember Who’s holding the leash.

Because victory doesn’t come from how strong we are.
Victory comes from belonging to the One who has already overcome the world.

Keep the Faith… Carpe Diem

“Take heart! I have overcome the world.” — John 16:33
