Old Lazy Dog brings a different view of faith, life, and the struggles we face in the marketplace and our day to day lives…while we strive to go deeper in our faith walk, put our faith to work, and see God at work around us on a daily basis.

Tetelestai: A Dog's Perspective

Tetelestai: A Dog's Perspective

There I was stretched out on the floor again… listening.
My human had that voice again...
Slow. Deep. Hushed.

He read about the cross.
Then he read a word.

Tetelestai.”

He stopped after saying it… like it needed room.

It is finished.

Finished means nothing left to do.

But this Hebrew word…
Tetelestai”…

My human said it meant more than just “done.”
It meant “Paid… Served… and Won.”

I tilted my head.

Paid.

He said in the old days, when a debt was settled, they would write Tetelestai” across it.

“Paid in full.”

Now I don’t have money.
But I do understand owing something.

Like when I chew something I shouldn’t…
I know I’ve got a debt to settle.
I’ll come over slow, ears down, tail low… hoping mercy comes before justice.

My human says our sin is like that—but bigger.
Much bigger.

And Jesus… He paid it.
Not part of it.
Not most of it.
All of it…
Tetelestai.
Paid in full.

I let that sit a minute.

Then he said something about a Courtroom.

Now I don’t go in courtrooms… but I’ve heard the word “guilty.”

He said “Tetelestai” also means the sentence has been fully served.

Not reduced.
Not delayed.
Served.
That means no more punishment is coming.
None.

I lifted my head at that.

Because I know what it feels like to wait for what’s coming.
To brace.
To expect the consequence.

But this… this means Jesus didn’t just pay the debt—He took the punishment too.

So there’s nothing left hanging over us.
No sentence waiting.
No shadow following.
Tetelestai.

Then my human’s voice changed again.

Stronger this time.
Like when he talks about victory.

He said in the military, that word meant the battle had been completely won.

Not still fighting.
Not hoping to win.
Won.

Now that, I understand.

I’ve chased things before.
Squirrels mostly.
Sometimes I win…
Sometimes I don’t.
But when I do, I know it.

It’s over.
No more chasing.
Victory.

And my human said when Jesus said “Tetelestai”…
It meant the battle over sin, death, and the enemy was finished.

Completely.
Nothing left to fight for.
Nothing left undecided.
Won.

And He said it… not with His last bit of strength fading away… but like a declaration.

Like truth standing tall, even on a cross.

“It is finished.”

Tetelestai.

Paid.
Served.
Won.

I looked over at my human.

His eyes were wet… but he was smiling.

Sad… but smiling.

Then I realized… maybe it’s because what looked like the worst moment…
Was actually the final victory.

When my human calls me, I come.
Not because I’m afraid… but because I trust him.

And if Jesus really paid it all…
Took it all…
Won it all…

Then maybe…
We don’t come to Him afraid either.
We come because it’s already finished.

Tetelestai

Keep the Faith… Carpe Diem

“When Jesus had received the sour wine, He said, “It is finished!” Then bowing His head, He gave up His spirit.”
