“O God, You are my God; earnestly I seek You; my soul thirsts for You; my flesh faints for You, as in a dry and weary land where there is no water.”
- Psalm 63:1
If you’ve ever watched a dog catch a scent, you know what it means to chase after something with your whole heart.
Head down.
Tail up.
Ears tuned.
Nothing else in the world matters.
That’s the picture that comes to mind when my human reads David’s words in Psalm 63.
He wasn’t sitting in a palace when he wrote that.
He was in the wilderness.
Dry land.
Hard ground.
Dust in his mouth.
Trouble behind him and uncertainty in front of him.
And what was he chasing?
Not comfort.
Not applause.
Not an easier trail.
He was chasing God.
“O God, You are my God…”
That’s personal.
Not just a God.
Not just the God.
But my God.
A relationship.
A belonging.
A covenant leash that binds heart to heart.
“Earnestly I seek You…”
Earnestly means early, diligently, urgently.
It’s the way an old dog scratches his kennel before sunrise because he knows his human is up and getting his day started.
It’s not casual curiosity.
It’s longing.
“My soul thirsts…”
Now I don’t know about you, but I’ve been that dog after a long summer run.
Tongue hanging.
Chest heaving.
Looking for water like it’s life itself.
That’s the image here.
Not a polite sip.
A desperate drink.
And maybe that’s where some of us are today.
Dry.
Weary.
Running on dust.
Here’s the truth:
The wilderness doesn’t create thirst — it reveals it.
When everything is stripped away, you find out what you’ve really been chasing.
Some chase success.
Some chase security.
Some chase recognition.
But David chased God.
And here’s the good news — when you chase after God, you’re not running from Him… you’re running toward the One who’s already pursuing you.
The Shepherd who never loses the scent of His sheep.
The world will tell you to chase dreams.
Chase platforms.
Chase comfort.
But the soul?
The soul was built to chase its Maker.
And when you do —
When you seek Him early
Thirst for Him deeply
Long for Him honestly —
You’ll find something remarkable.
He satisfies.
Not with shallow puddles.
But with living water.
So today, lower your head to the trail.
Lift your heart toward heaven.
And chase after Jesus like He’s the only thing that matters.
Because in a dry and weary land…
He is the Water.
Keep the Faith… Carpe Diem
