I’ve noticed something about humans. They seem to always be searching for something.
My human searches for his keys, his glasses, the television remote, and sometimes his patience and peace of mind.
Me?
I mostly search for snacks under the recliner and squirrels in the backyard.
We all have priorities, I suppose.
The other morning, I was stretched out on the porch pretending not to listen while my human read from his Bible.
Dogs are good at that.
We act sleepy, but one ear always stays open—especially if food or faith gets mentioned.
That’s when I heard these words:
“But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things will be provided for you.” - Matthew 6:33
Seek first.
Not seek leftovers.
Not seek God after everything else is handled.
First.
Now I may just be an old dog, but even I understand priorities.
When my human calls my name, I come running.
I know his voice matters more than whatever might have distracted me.
Humans get distracted too.
Some folks chase money.
Some chase bigger houses.
Some chase nicer trucks.
Some chase success.
Some chase comfort, schedules, hobbies, worries, or approval from people who probably don’t even like dogs.
Before long, hearts get crowded, minds get tired, and faith gets pushed into a back corner like an old chew toy nobody notices anymore.
My human says most folks spend so much time chasing the temporary that they forget the eternal.
Then he read another verse that made me lift my head clear off my paws:
“So, because you are lukewarm, and neither hot nor cold, I am going to vomit you out of My mouth.”
- Revelation 3:16
Whew!
That’s stronger language than when I accidentally rolled in something I shouldn’t have under the porch.
A lukewarm water bowl is bad enough, but a lukewarm faith?
That’s dangerous.
My human said Jesus never called us to a halfway faith.
He didn’t die on the cross so people could give Him spare time, leftover attention, or a Sunday-only heart.
He wants believers fully committed—hot with love, faith, obedience, and trust.
Dogs understand wholehearted devotion.
When my human walks through the door, my whole body celebrates…
Maybe that’s what seeking God first looks like.
Not perfection.
Not pretending.
Just loving Him with your whole heart instead of giving Him whatever scraps are left after the world wears you out.
Jesus never asked for leftovers.
He never asked to be squeezed into the schedule somewhere between work, worry, and watching television.
He said seek Him first.
Not second.
Not when life falls apart.
And not just on Sundays.
First.
My human says when people truly seek God first, something changes.
Worry loosens its grip.
Priorities straighten out.
Hearts soften.
Lukewarm faith grows stronger and starts catching fire again.
And our faith walk starts looking a whole lot more alive.
Wait… did someone say “walk”?
Keep the Faith… Carpe Diem
