Groundhog Day: A Dog's Perspective

Well, here we go again.

That funny little fella in a top hat pops his head out of a hole, squints into the daylight like I do when my human flips on the kitchen light too fast… and the whole world hangs on his opinion about the weather.

Six more weeks of winter… or spring’s just around the corner.

As an old dog, I don’t need a groundhog to tell me what season I’m in. 
My bones let me know when it’s cold, and my nose lets me know when something good is cooking. 
Still, I find myself watching that furry meteorologist every year like it really matters.

Funny thing is — I do the same with God sometimes.

I peek out of my “hole,” squint at my circumstances, and try to decide what kind of day it’s going to be. 
Is today going to be a winter day? 
Hard, cold, slow, and achy? 
Or is today going to be a spring day — fresh, hopeful, full of life?

But here’s what this old dog has learned lying by the fire of faith:
God doesn’t need a shadow to know His plan.

Groundhog Day reminds me that life can feel stuck on repeat. 
Same food in my bowl. 
Same porch. 
Same squirrel taunting me from the fence. 
Same aches. 
Same worries. 
Same struggles.

Feels like six more weeks of the same old same old.

But the Bible says in Lamentations 3:22–23

“Because of the Lord’s great love we are not consumed, for his compassions never fail. They are new every morning; great is your faithfulness.”

Every morning. 
Not just on sunny mornings. 
Not just when the groundhog likes what he sees. 
Every morning.

That means even when life feels like Groundhog Day — same troubles, same trials, same tired bones — God is doing something new in us.

You see, the groundhog measures seasons by shadows.

But God measures our lives by His grace.

So if you’re stuck in a long winter today — spiritually, emotionally, or just plain tired — remember this old dog’s wisdom:
Spring is coming. 
Even if the groundhog says otherwise.

And if you’re in a bright, warm season right now — enjoy it, wag your tail, and thank the Lord for it. 
Because seasons change, but God does not.

As for me?

I’ll keep napping, trusting, and barking at squirrels until the Master calls me inside. 
Because whether it’s winter or spring, I belong to Him.

And that’s better than any Groundhog Day prediction…
