Old Lazy Dog brings a different view of faith, life, and the struggles we face in the marketplace and our day to day lives…while we strive to go deeper in our faith walk, put our faith to work, and see God at work around us on a daily basis.

Fight: A Dog's Perspective

Fight the good fight of the faith. Take hold ofthe eternal life to which you were called when you made your good confession in the presence of many witnesses.”
1 Timothy 6:12 NIV

Sometimes I like the thought of a good fight.

I’m talking about the kind of fight that starts when somebody walks up the driveway.
I bark.
I stand tall.
My tail gets stiff.
I let everybody know this is my yard and my people.

Most of the time, my human just smiles and says, “That’s enough, buddy. I’ve got this.

Oh, I’ll bark when the UPS truck gets too close, and I’ll let the neighbor’s cat know whose yard he’s trespassing in. But real fighting?
Teeth bared.
Growling.
Fur flying.
I’d just as soon stay on the porch.

My human was watching the news the other evening.
Folks were arguing about this and protesting that.
Everybody seemed mad about something.
I laid my head on his boot and wondered why people fight so much.

Then the next morning I watched him do something different.

He quietly stood up for a man being treated unfairly.
He spoke the truth without raising his voice.
He helped someone who couldn’t help themselves.
Later, I heard him praying for people who disagreed with him instead of talking ugly about them.

That’s when I started figuring something out.

Not every fight is the same.

Some fights are about pride.
Some are about getting our own way.
Those usually leave everyone limping.

But some fights are worth every ounce of effort.

My human fights to keep his family close to Jesus.
He fights the temptation to hold a grudge.
He fights to forgive when it’s hard.
He fights for truth when lies seem easier.
He fights to protect the weak, encourage the weary, and share the Gospel with people who need hope.

I’ve noticed he usually does those battles on his knees before he ever does them on his feet.

Us dogs understand loyalty.
If someone threatened my family, I’d be between them and danger before you could shake a treat bag.

Maybe that’s one reason God calls us to “fight the good fight.

Not because He wants quarrels, but because love is worth defending, truth is worth proclaiming, and faith is worth living—even when it’s unpopular.

I’ve learned that courage doesn’t always sound like a growl.
Sometimes it sounds like a gentle answer.
Sometimes it looks like refusing to compromise.
Sometimes it’s quietly doing what’s right when nobody is watching.

Reality is, I’m really not fond of fights.

But I am learning that some things are too important to walk away from.

So today, don’t waste your strength fighting the people around you.
Fight the sin within you.
Fight for your family.
Fight for your neighbor.
Fight for the truth.
Fight for the Gospel.
Fight the battles that matter.
Fight them God’s way.
And leave the outcome in His faithful hands.

And when the battle feels bigger than you, remember whose side you’re on.

After all, the battle belongs to the Lord.

Keep the Faith… Carpe Diem
