I’m just a dog, but I notice things.
I notice the sound of my human’s shoes hitting the floor each morning.
I notice the smell of coffee drifting through the house.
I notice the familiar squeak of my food bin opening and the gentle scratch behind my ears before we start the day.
Most days look a lot like the day before.
No fireworks.
No parades.
No grand adventures.
Just ordinary.
Now, if I’m honest, I sometimes wish every day involved a truck ride, a lake, and a hamburger accidentally falling off the picnic table.
But most days don’t look like that.
Most days are made up of walks, naps, treats, and waiting patiently for supper.
And as I’ve watched my human, I’ve learned something.
God does some of His best work in the ordinary.
David wrote, “You reveal the path of life to me; in Your presence is abundant joy; at Your right hand are eternal pleasures” - Psalm 16:11
Notice he didn’t say joy only comes on mountaintops or during victories.
Joy comes from being with God.
His presence turns ordinary moments into sacred ones.
My human seems to understand that.
Sometimes he sits quietly with his Bible before the day begins.
Nothing dramatic happens.
No thunder from heaven.
No angel choir.
Just a man, a chair, a Bible, and a faithful God meeting him in the quiet.
Then there’s John 3:16
“For God so loved the world that He gave His one and only Son…”
That verse isn’t ordinary.
It is extraordinary.
Yet because we’ve heard it so often, we can let familiarity dull our wonder.
The cross changes everything, including Mondays.
Because Jesus came, every sunrise becomes evidence of mercy.
Every breath becomes a gift.
Every meal becomes provision.
Every goodbye carries hope of reunion.
Every ordinary day becomes sacred ground where God walks with His people.
The world keeps telling folks that joy is somewhere else—some bigger house, better job, newer car, or next big accomplishment.
But God often whispers that joy is already sitting right in front of us.
It’s in the morning sunrise.
It’s in the laughter around the dinner table.
It’s in a prayer before bed.
It’s in a faithful spouse, a trusted friend, a church family, and another day of God’s undeserved grace.
And all too often, we spend too much time chasing extraordinary moments that we miss the grace hidden in ordinary ones.
Today may not be spectacular.
But it is a gift.
And every ordinary breath, ordinary meal, ordinary conversation, and ordinary act of kindness is wrapped in the extraordinary grace of God.
That’s enough to make even an old dog wag his tail.
Prayer: Lord, thank You for the grace You pour into ordinary days. Open our eyes to see Your goodness in the routines, the quiet moments, and the simple blessings we often overlook. Fill our hearts with the joy that comes from Your presence and the peace that comes from trusting You. Amen.
