“Then he said to me, “Prophesy to these bones and say to them, ‘Dry bones, hear the word of the Lord! This is what the Sovereign Lord says to these bones: I will make breath enter you, and you will come to life.”
- Ezekiel 37:4-5 NIV
I was snoozing on the porch the other evening when my human started reading from his Bible about a valley full of dry bones.
Now, as a dog, bones usually get my attention.
I know bones.
Big bones. Little bones. Buried bones that I forgot where I buried.
If you mention bones, my ears perk up and my tail starts thumping.
But these bones were different.
These weren’t steak bones.
They were people bones.
Dry bones.
Scattered bones.
Bones that had been lying there so long that everyone assumed their story was over.
Then God asked Ezekiel a question:
“Son of man, can these bones live?”
My human stopped reading and whispered, “Only You know, Lord.”
I imagine Ezekiel looked over the valley and said the same thing. Because from where he stood, there wasn’t much hope.
I’ve noticed humans do that sometimes.
They look at broken relationships, tired hearts, old regrets, unanswered prayers, churches that have lost their fire, and lives worn thin by disappointment.
They see dry bones and conclude, “Nothing can come from this.”
But God specializes in valleys.
He told Ezekiel to speak His Word, and suddenly…
Bones rattled.
Tendons formed.
Flesh appeared.
Breath entered them.
Dead things became alive.
As I listened from my spot on the porch, I wondered if some folks who follow Jesus have become a little like those dry bones.
Still in the right place.
Still carrying the right name.
But missing the joy, wonder, and life that comes from walking closely with Him.
The same God who brought life to that valley can awaken weary believers today. Following Jesus isn’t just about surviving until heaven. It’s about being fully alive in Christ right now.
Maybe believers ought to remember that.
Jesus didn’t save us so we’d simply exist until Heaven.
He came so we’d truly live—filled with His Spirit, overflowing with hope, eager to love, serve, forgive, and worship.
The same God who breathed life into a valley of dry bones can breathe fresh life into weary hearts today.
So if faith feels brittle…
If joy seems buried…
If hope has dried up…
Listen for the voice of the Lord.
The bones still rattle when God speaks.
And this old lazy dog believes that when the Breath of God moves in, tails wag, hearts awaken, and dry bones live again.
Prayer:
Lord, breathe fresh life into us. Wake us from spiritual weariness and fill us anew with Your Spirit. Help us live with the joy, hope, and purpose You intended through Christ. May dry places become living testimonies of Your power. Amen.
Keep the Faith… Carpe Diem
