Old Lazy Dog brings a different view of faith, life, and the struggles we face in the marketplace and our day to day lives…while we strive to go deeper in our faith walk, put our faith to work, and see God at work around us on a daily basis.

Dog-Like Faith: A Dog's Perspective

Dog-Like Faith: A Dog's Perspective

I am continually watching my human.
He doesn’t always realize it.
He usually thinks I’m just lying there.
But I’m watching.
Listening.
Learning.

Humans often say things about faith.
They read it, study it, talk it out loud.

My human does too.

I’ve heard him read from that Book…
the one that smells like worn pages and early mornings.

And today he read from James—about not just hearing the Word, but doing it.

I tilted my head at that.

Because… that sounds a lot like being a dog.

See, when my human calls me, I don’t sit there and think about it.
I don’t analyze his tone or debate obedience.
I don’t say, “That’s a good command, human… I’ll reflect on it.

No.
I go.

Right then.
Right away.
Tail moving.
Heart ready.

James 1:22 says “But be doers of the Word, not hearers only deceiving yourselves.

And I thought—well, that’s just it, isn’t it?
Faith isn’t in the hearing.
It’s in the going.
And the doing.

My human sometimes hears… but hesitates.

I don’t.

When he opens the door, I trust what’s on the other side.
When he says “stay,” I stay—even when I don’t understand why.
When he reaches for me, I lean in, not away.

That’s dog-like faith.

Simple.
Immediate.
Whole.

I’ve never seen my human look into a mirror and walk away forgetting what he looks like…
But I’ve seen him read the Word.
Put it down.
Then walk away like he didn’t just read it.

James talks about that too.
Says it’s like forgetting your own face.

I don’t forget my human.

I know his voice.
I know his step.
I know his heart—even on the hard days when it’s quieter than usual.

And maybe that’s what faith really is.

Not just knowing the Word—but knowing the One who speaks it.

Trusting Him enough to move when He says move.
Stopping when He says stop.
Waiting when He says wait.

No second-guessing.
No delay.

Just… obedience.

My human thinks he’s teaching me.

But sometimes, I think I’m here to remind him:
Faith isn’t complicated.
It’s not about having all the answers.
It’s about hearing His voice…
And going.

Like a dog.

Tail wagging.
Heart steady.
Eyes fixed on the Master.

That’s the kind of faith that lives.

That’s dog-like faith.

Keep the Faith… Carpe Diem

“But be doers of the word and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves. Because if anyone is a hearer of the word and not a doer, he is like a man looking at his own face in a mirror. For he looks at himself, goes away, and immediately forgets what kind of man he was. But the one who looks intently into the perfect law of freedom and perseveres in it, and is not a forgetful hearer but one who does good works—this person will be blessed in what he does.”
- James 1:22-25 HCSB
