I was stretched out on the porch the other day — nose in the sunshine, one ear up for any crinkle of a wrapper — when I got to thinking about the story my human had read out loud. The one about Jesus feeding the crowd.
As evening approached, the disciples came to him and said, “This is a remote place, and it’s already getting late. Send the crowds away, so they can go to the villages and buy themselves some food.”
Jesus replied, “They do not need to go away. You give them something to eat.”
“We have here only five loaves of bread and two fish,” they answered. - Matthew 14:15-17 NIV
Now, if I’d been there, I’d have been right at the front of that hillside, tail thumping, because rumor had it there were Happy Mealsinvolved. And let me tell you, that is holy ground for a dog.
Picture it:
Five thousand men, plus their wives, plus their kids, plus probably a few grandmas with cookies in their purses — all sitting there, stomachs growling louder than my belly at 5:01 when dinner is late.
The disciples looked around like a pack of worried puppies:
“Lord, we don’t have near enough food.”
And all they could scrounge up was what some little boy brought — two fish and five small loaves bread.
If it were me, I’d have said, “Well… that’s only enough for me.”
But Jesus?
He just smiled that gentle shepherd smile, took those Happy Meals in His hands, blessed them, and started passing them out.
And wouldn’t you know it — sandwiches kept coming… and never ran out.
People ate and ate until they were full — the kind of full that makes you loosen your belt and lean back in the grass.
The kind of full that makes even a dog stop begging for one more bite.
And then — here’s my favorite part — the disciples went around with baskets and gathered up the leftovers. Twelve full baskets!
Enough for every stray dog in Galilee, plus some to-go boxes for the road.
Here’s what this old dog sees in that miracle:
Jesus doesn’t need a lot to do something big.
He just needs what you’ve got.
Your small faith?
He can use it.
Your little gift?
He can multiply it.
Your ordinary lunch?
He can turn it into a feast.
God doesn’t need a full pantry to feed you.
He just needs your trust and a willing heart.
You may feel like all you’ve got is a small lunch in a big world, but in Jesus’ hands — even a little becomes plenty.
When you feel like you don’t have enough…
Enough faith
Enough strength
Enough love
Enough time
Remember that little boy and his Happy Meal.
In Jesus’ hands, small things become holy things.
If He can feed thousands with two fish sandwiches, then surely He can take care of you — even on days when your bowl feels a little empty.
Now curl up on the couch, loosen your belt, and thank the Lord of Leftovers — because with Jesus, there’s always more than enough.
Keep the Faith… Carpe Diem
