The Christmas Candle

The Christmas Candle

“The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.” - John 1:5 NIV

There’s something about lighting a Christmas candle that can calm the soul. One small wick, one spark, and suddenly the room hushes. The glow fills the space with a kind of quiet warmth that makes us breathe a little deeper and think a little clearer.

Maybe that’s the point.

A candle doesn’t shout. It doesn’t demand.

It just is—steady, gentle, present.

And that’s exactly how Jesus came.

Not with trumpets and headlines…
Not with armies and spectacle… (though the warrior angels must have been quite the spectacle.)

But with the soft glow of a newborn’s cry in a Bethlehem night.

“The people walking in darkness have seen a great light; on those living in the land of deep darkness a light has dawned.”
Isaiah 9:2

It’s funny, isn’t it?

God could have flooded the sky with brilliance… but instead He offered a single Light, small enough to be cradled, bright enough to save the world.

When we light a Christmas candle this year, let’s pay attention.

Watch the flame.

A Candle Starts with a Spark —
a reminder that every work of God in our life begins with a moment: a whisper, a nudge, a quiet invitation to trust Him again.

A Candle Glows without Noise —
a reminder that God often speaks in stillness. We’re the ones who turn up the volume. He’s the One who waits patiently for us to notice.

A Candle Pushes Back Darkness — not with force, but with presence. Light doesn’t argue with the dark; it simply shows up and the darkness loses ground.

Maybe this Christmas some of us are carrying some shadows—uncertainty, heaviness, unanswered prayers.

Here’s the good news: Jesus is still the Light who steps into the dark places.

Not to shame us, not to hurry us, but to warm us, guide us, and remind us that we are not alone.

So go ahead—light that candle.

Let its glow preach a quiet sermon to your heart:

Christ has come.
Christ is here.
Christ will come again.

And as the flame flickers and steadies, may we whisper a simple prayer:

Jesus, Light of the world, shine in my home, shine in my heart, shine in my life.

Because one small light—His light—is enough to change everything.

Keep the Faith… Carpe Diem
