Old Lazy Dog brings a different view of faith, life, and the struggles we face in the marketplace and our day to day lives…while we strive to go deeper in our faith walk, put our faith to work, and see God at work around us on a daily basis.

Two Rules

Two Rules

“But when the Pharisees heard that he had silenced the Sadducees with his reply, they met together to question him again. One of them, an expert in religious law, tried to trap him with this question: “Teacher, which is the most important commandment in the law of Moses?” - Matthew 22:34-36 NLT

Early on in my banking career, I worked in a corporate main office setting, while a buddy of mine was an Assistant Manager in a branch attached to the corporate office. Just about every day for 6 months or so, David Belcher and I would have lunch together in that branch’s break room and watch the Andy Griffith show... and play “Name That Episode”. The person who could name the Andy episode the quickest would earn the glory of being the day’s winner, while the loser would have to buy that winner a Coca-Cola.

I love those old Andy Griffith reruns. Especially the episodes that Don Knotts was in. His Barney Fife character just makes me laugh out loud.

My favorite Barney Fife moment - Two Rules at the Rock

“Here at The Rock… we have two major rules.
Memorize them so you can say them in your sleep.
The first rule is: Obey all rules.
Secondly, Do Not write on the walls as it takes a lot of work to erase writing off of walls.”
- Barney Fife “Two Rules at the Rock” episode, The Andy Griffith Show

Jesus broke down the Law of Moses into two major commands - two major rules, if you would:

“Jesus replied,‘You must love the Lord your God with all your heart, all your soul, and all your mind.‘This is the first and greatest commandment. A second is equally important: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.‘ The entire law and all the demands of the prophets are based on these two commandments.” ~ Matthew 22:37-40 NLT

Two rules for us to live by: Love the Lord your God with all that you are and Love your neighbor as yourself.

I wonder what our little part of the world might look like if we all began to strive to live by these two commands?

I wonder what the news might look like? I wonder what might happen to all the anger and hate and nastiness that we hear and see?

Maybe we would all have time to watch more Andy Griffith reruns... together.

Keep the Faith... Carpe Diem
