The Woo Hoo Song

Some of the Pharisees in the crowd said to Jesus, "Teacher, rebuke your disciples!" "I tell you," he replied, "if they keep quiet, the stones will cry out." – Luke 19:39-40

Many years ago now, I noticed that when a siren would pass by that Jake the Dog would sort of throw his head back and do this sort of Yip Howl thing that would just make me bust out in laughter.

Now, I do a pretty mean police siren imitation. So, if I ever needed a good laugh I would start sounding like a police siren and watch Jake throw back his head and do the Yip Howl.

Later, after Amy and I brought Princess Mali into our family, we wondered if Mali could or would join in on Jake’s song too.

Mali, being half Malamute and half Labrador Retriever never barked (the Malamute in her I guess). So, we weren’t even sure if she even had a voice and didn’t know what to expect.

As the song leader, I started the song and did my best Woo Hoo… my best police siren… then Amy joined in and right on cue Jake the Dog threw back his head and joined in the melody with his Yip Howl.

Princess Mali sat there for a moment and just sort of looked at us like we were crazy (and we might be).

But then, without reservation or hesitation, Mali threw back her head… pointed her snout to the sky… and added her wolf-like Woo Hoo harmony. Right on pitch. Right on key.

Princess Mali could sing!

And we all laughed and sang (ever seen a dog laugh?)

Over the years, we experienced many a Woo Hoo chorus with Jake and Mali… and then the girls… and from time to time we would have a full chorus with Gran and Andaddy joining us all in doing the Woo Hoo song…

And sometimes it would just be a duet as an emergency vehicle would pass near… each time bringing a laugh and a song.

Throughout God’s Word, we see His followers singing and dancing in praise… in worship… with joyful and joy-filled hearts. We read of His creation singing His praises… And we read of Jesus telling the Pharisees that if His followers didn’t praise Him that the Stones would cry out.

In these trying times… in this crazy world economy… I wonder if we have forgotten how to sing… to worship… to praise?

I wonder if we have forgotten how to throw our heads back and sing with voices that come from somewhere deep inside – singing of His Glory.

Laughing and dancing… and singing the Woo-Hoo chorus.

Keep the Faith… Carpe Diem

Let the heavens rejoice, let the earth be glad; let the sea resound, and all that is in it; let the fields be jubilant, and everything in them. Then all the trees of the forest will sing for joy; they will sing before the LORD, for he comes, he comes to judge the earth. He will judge the world in righteousness and the peoples in his truth.” – Psalm 96:11-13 NIV
